Summary:
Twenty-four years into the devastation of the planet due to War’s army, Miriam is struggling to survive on her own. But when she confronts War she learns she doesn’t wish to die, especially not at the hands of War. Unsure how to interpret War’s acknowledgment of her relationship to him, Miriam refuses to accept her current situation or living with War by helping raid and kill innocent people. With sheer power and hunting skills, Miriam hurts War’s military numbers and saves human lives. But as stakes increase in a broken community, Miriam is forced to trust War by forced proximity.
Qualities:
Prose: The story enlists figurative and imaginative word choices that usher the reader alongside Miriam and War. The language is detailed but easy to understand, allowing for an immersive read. As a dark romance, the novel delivers detailed elements of a power struggle of love defiance that makes the reader want more.
Character Development: The novel follows Miriam and War throughout the story. We learn about Miriam’s past, her strengths and weaknesses and her compassion for the people in her community. The power dynamic between her and War are shocking but they compliment each other in terms of survival and strength. These factors inflict the characters view of each other and their interactions in the rest of the story.
World Building: The world building follows Miriam as she lives in War’s camp and fights along side him. The reader learns about Jerusalem and the neighboring countries. The reader also sees the damage War is easily able to inflict on the land, the people, and even the dead, making surviving all the more difficult.
Recommendation:
I recommend this book to someone who is interested in continuing with the series and has an interest in the four horsemen. This book is more fleshed out and detailed than the first book of the series, Pestilence. It provides enough explanation about the world and the importance between the two main characters that it gives the reader a sense of awe. Readers will be drawing in for more. This dark romance is packed with slow burns, lore, love, and protective energy that just makes sense for the novel. The detail, world building, and complexity of the story is refreshing and worth a read!
