Summary:
Mark, The worlds best assassin decides to no longer be of service after a painful past. But when someone is hired to assassinate him, he has to learn how to remove the killer from his life without switching back into the monster he’s all to familiar with.
Qualities:
Prose: The word choice in the novel is both suspenseful and comical, helping alleviate tension from serious encounters. The language is easy to understand but tense as well as light hearted.
Character Development: Character development shifts from past and present tense, as certain memories and emotions elicit growth or decline in Marks character. His personal life, wants and desires change and impact him as a person, as well those around him, altering his development for the better.
World Building: The world building is well thought out and ventures to many different scenes and places as Mark travels around the world prior to his decision to no longer be a hired assassin. Some of the world building is created through Marks memories, impacting the story and the characters choices.
Recommendation:
I highly recommend this book for someone looking for a serious but not so serious novel that is also fast pace and comically enjoyable. This book has several unexpected twists and turns, full of adventure and enjoyable dialogue. Bonus points for introducing a life saving cat that follows Mark everywhere.
Notable Quotes:
- “Adrenaline is the ultimate painkiller” (p. 1)
- “Down the stairs and back in my apartment, I hang the jump rope from its hook next to the door. P. Kitty waddles over to his food dish in the kitchen and yowls, demanding tribute” (p. 9).
- My hands are flat on the counter, like I’m trying to hold myself down from floating away. These hands have caused so much hurt, that have made my eighth-step list so goddamn long. Kenji seems to sense the shifting gravity and places his right hand over my left, to keep me grounded” (p. 17).
