Summary:
Brought back to Illya, Paedyn Gray is betrothed to Kitt Azer, the king. Despite her romantic feelings for his brother, Kai Azer, Paedyn and the enforcer must refrain from showing affection towards each other. But to ensure her loyalty as future queen, Paedyn must complete her own trials that will test her own skills, relationships, and desire to live. Secrets are unearthed, shattering everything she knows.
Qualities:
Prose: The novel does a great job at describing the characters emotions and how their viewpoint effects the world around them. The tone is lyrical, grounded but expansive in ways that attract a readers attention and a need to know more.
Character Development: The character development is thoroughly reviewed and changes significantly throughout the book. As events, emotions, and secrets are revealed, so do the true colors of the characters. All characters from the previous books are included in this novel.
World Building: The world building is often knitted around Illya, but travels to distant lands as it impacts Paedyn and Kai. As the story progresses, much is revealed in back stories and Paedyn's trials.
Recommendation:
As the third book to the Powerless series, I recommend this book to anyone who wishes for an emotional ride. The novel is pact with adventure, thrill, emotions and desires, and well kept secrets. I enjoyed learning more about the past and how certain decisions impacted the characters. I appreciated the thoughtful ending as it comes full circle, closing the series for the better.
Notable Quotes:
- “You’re quite the poet, Prince.” Moonlight pools in the dimple that accompanies his grin. “And you the muse, darling.”
- “I’ll be forced to spend my days at her service but never at her side. In her shadow but never truly seen. In love with a girl I’d have bowed to long before she became my queen.”
- “We are all waiting for someone.”
