Only when Sara learns the shocking truth about Pestilence’s resistance to death, she slowly understands her dilemma — she can’t escape him or save Earth from damnation. Pestilence is cruel and hurts Sara in more ways than one. Keeping her captive, Pestilence and Sara start to learn more about each other and what makes the other fascinated in each other. And in turn, Pestilence learns what it truly means to be human.

Qualities:

As a dark romance, the novel delivers detailed elements of a power struggle and love that makes the reader want more.

Recommendation:

I recommend this book to someone who is interested in a good read about the four horsemen. The novel explains who they are, what they are on Earth to do, and how a certain woman impacts them in the most surprising ways. This dark romance is packed with a lot of slow burn action, lore, love, and character dynamics that just make sense. The detail, world building, and complexity of the story is refreshing and worth a read!

Notable Quotes:

  • “No one knows why the horsemen arrived five years ago, or why they disappeared so soon afterward, or why now Pestilence and only Pestilence has returned to wreak havoc on the living” (p. 10).
  • “The sugary-sweet taste of the sandwich sours in my mouth. I take a few deep breaths before I try another bite. ‘I don’t like watching them die,’ Pestilence admits behind me” (p.121).
  • “His eyes shine. ‘I cannot,’ he says gently. ‘To speak the holy language is to press divine will upon the world” (p. 220).
