Summary:

Layla Dupree is a baker with a terrible dating history. After a date gone wrong, she runs into a distant friend, Caleb Alverez, who’s dating history is not as simple as it may appear. After some discussion, the two decide to platonically date to test why their dating habits aren’t working and what needs improvement. The closer they interact, the more they learn about each others strengths and weaknesses, and why dating can be so hard, even when it isn’t meant to be.

Qualities:

Prose: The writing is lyrical and well written. It is very attractive, detailed, and enhances the books readability. Specific details are unique to the characters sensory perception, describing how and what they are feeling or sensing at a given moment.

Character Development: Though the character development between Layla and Caleb are wonderful and inspire love, the characters lack a strong background. I questioned Layla’s family dynamic and how it could improve the story if they were included in the present moment. I also questioned Caleb’s academic history, why he is pursuing one career over another and what led to his current job.

World Building: The audience learn a lot about the small town through the characters interactions. How the characters interact with the environment is unique and intimate in this small town romance.

Recommendation:

I highly recommend this book for readers that are looking for a well written, thoughtful, and unique love story. If you enjoy baking, this is the book for you! If you are interested in a novel that surges creativity and sparks new love, I recommend reading this novel.

Notable Quotes:

  • “She takes her time coming around the table to me, her hazel eyes blazing in the light of the setting sun. Warm golds and burnished reds light her up like she’s a dancing flame twisting closer and closer. I’ve never wanted to be burned so badly in my life” (p. 167-168)
  • “Socked feet shuffle across the floor, an uneven step that tells me she’s dancing. Or trying to, I think as she thunks her knee on a cabinet with a muffled curse. I smile into my throw pillow”     (p. 223).
