Summary:

Paedyn Gray is Powerless in a world of super natural wielders. She learns to fight and steal at a young age. She passes off as a Psychic to survive. After suddenly saving Kai Azer’s life, a Prince and future Enforcer of Illya, Paedyn is put through the test in ceremonial trial where only the strongest survive. But surviving within the trail is nothing compared to staying alive within the castle walls. Secrets are just as dangerous as trusting those you love.

Qualities:

Prose: The book is lyrically written, expressing emotions and details effortlessly. The use of metaphorical word choices aids in the overall description of the books need to tell an engaging story filled with twists and turns.

Character Development: The characters are boundless and are unique to describing the importance of the story and the overall plot. Everyone has unique abilities that are used expertly, indicating how strong these people truly are. The love triangle and expression of emotion between characters is fresh, playful, and emotional from the start.

World Building: The world building is well thought out and described in a way to enforce fantastic realism. The scenes and environments play an important role in the characters upbringing and development. However, during the trials the same animals are often represented in different environments which takes away from their uniqueness and believability.

Recommendation:

I highly recommend this book and the overall series to anyone interested in a widely beautiful and strong female protagonist; and a strong male lead who is learning his strengths and weaknesses while embarking on a romantic journey with the most unlikely of women. This book is filled with tension, banter, and lyrical dialogue that makes reading all the more enjoyable.

Notable Quotes:

  • “I'd never thought about what my favorite color was before. It never seemed important. Not until I looked into a pair of ocean blue eyes and realized that perhaps drowning was a beautiful thing. Not until I looked into a pair of fiery blue eyes and realized that perhaps burning was a painless thing. Not until I looked into a pair of sky blue eyes and realized that perhaps falling was a peaceful thing. I'd never thought about what my favorite color was before because I hadn't seen one that was worthy of the title. Until now, that is. "Blue," I say, my voice low.”

  • “Oh, darling, as long as you still think I’m pretty, I don’t give a damn what I look like.”

  • “My pretty Pae, what have you done to me?”

  • “Every girl deserves something equally as pretty and deadly as they are.”
