Summary:
Tessa Cade lives amongst the sick and dying in a region known as The Wilds. As an apothecary, Tessa helps where she can, tending to wounds and prescribing potentially life saving medicine. But she doesn’t work alone. Weston Lark accompanies Tessa most nights and helps who he can, until he vanishes for the night. But when Moonflower is stolen by multiple people in The Wilds and secrets of a revolt whisper in the Royal Sector, delivering medicine becomes more fatal. Then, with the kingdom of Kandala in civil unrest, a spark of rebellion blooms and there isn’t anything the king, his brother, or Tessa can do about it.

Recommendation:
I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in a quick read full of secrets, political unrest, action, romance, royal families, and a strong cast worth rooting for. I read through this book (first book of a three book series) so quick, I didn’t want to put it down! I didn’t encounter any chapters that were slow. Everything was paced really well and I enjoyed every bit of it. This is one of my new favorite series so far.
Notable Quotes:
- “I know this. He knows I know this. He sets the glass on the table and I take it. ‘Stringing people up outside the gates hasn’t stopped the smugglers,’ I say. ‘If anything, they grow bolder’” (p. 199).
- “My attention is on the fact that, out of every diversion available in the palace, she asked to read dry, boring documents. My attention is on the fact that, instead of claiming escape, she stayed in the carriage” (p. 231).
- “Her eyes are piercing, though, and I worry she’s going to ask what I’ve done. She’ll ask, and I’ll tell her, and I’ll destroy any remaining flickers of…whatever is between us” (p. 263).
